Understanding Clinical Trials for Leukemia

A clinical trial is when a new treatment is tested. It tests treatments that may work better or cause fewer problems than current treatments. A clinical trial may give you a chance to get a new treatment not yet available to the public.

Ask your doctor if there is a clinical trial that you should think about joining. They have specific rules, called criteria, for joining. Here are some of those rules.

  • Your overall health

  • The type and stage of your cancer

  • The types of treatments you have had already

Talk with your healthcare team about whether a trial might be right for you. Here are 2 ways you can find a list of clinical trials all over the country.

  • Call the National Cancer Institute’s free PDQ line at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237).

  • Go to www.clinicaltrials.gov.
